An Outpatient Program is the lightest level of structured mental health care at Blueview Recovery — usually one or two sessions a week in King of Prussia, with the rest of your week your own.

Some people arrive here after finishing an Intensive Outpatient Program. Others start here, because one or two sessions a week is genuinely the right amount of support for what they are carrying. Both are ordinary routes in.

What Outpatient Mental Health Treatment Involves

OP is built around regular appointments with a clinician who knows your history and does not need it re-explained every time. Most people attend once or twice a week, in individual therapy, group therapy, or a combination of the two.

Sessions are scheduled around work and family rather than the other way round. There is no daily attendance requirement and no full-day block to clear from your calendar.

What you work on is set by you and your clinician: managing symptoms, unpicking a pattern that keeps repeating, rebuilding sleep and routine, or handling the relationship or the job that keeps producing the same response in you.

Who Outpatient Care Suits

Outpatient care fits people whose symptoms are present but not overwhelming. Someone functioning at work while running on empty. Someone whose anxiety is manageable most weeks and unmanageable in a few. Someone who has done more intensive work and wants to keep hold of the thread.

It also fits people who have never been in treatment and do not want to begin with a program that swallows their week. Starting light is a legitimate way to start. If it turns out to be too light, stepping up is straightforward.

It does not suit someone in crisis. If symptoms have escalated to the point where a weekly hour cannot hold them, our Mental Health PHP or IOP is the honest answer, and an admissions clinician will say so. If you are in immediate danger, call 988 or 911 now rather than waiting for an appointment.

What Happens in a Session

Individual therapy is one clinician, one hour, and whatever you brought with you. Our clinicians draw on cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and trauma-informed care — chosen for what you are working on rather than applied as a house style.

Group therapy at the outpatient level puts you in a room with people carrying something recognisably similar. For some people it is the more useful of the two hours, which is why many attend both.

Whole-person practices are available alongside the clinical work: mindfulness and meditation, breathwork, grounding skills, somatic awareness, trauma-informed yoga and nutrition education. They exist for the part of this that talking does not reach.

Stepping Down Into OP — and Back Up If You Need To

Most people who finish an Intensive Outpatient Program do not simply stop on the last day. They step down into OP, which keeps a clinical relationship in place while the hours drop and normal life expands to fill the gap. The step is planned in advance, not improvised at discharge.

Stepping back up is equally normal. A bereavement, a return of symptoms, a change at home — none of these means the earlier work failed, and none of them means starting over. Your clinician reviews the level of care as you go rather than fixing it at intake.

Conditions Treated at the Outpatient Level

Our clinicians work with depression, anxiety and panic, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, mood disorders, personality disorders, and grief and loss. Treatment is built around your diagnosis, history and goals rather than around a template.

If a substance use disorder is also present, it is addressed in the same plan by the same team. That is what dual diagnosis treatment means here — one clinical picture, not two services taking turns.

Medication, Case Management and Cost

Medication management is available alongside outpatient therapy where it is clinically appropriate, and case management can help with the practical work — benefits, referrals, paperwork — that gets in the way of treatment more often than anyone admits.

Blueview Recovery is in-network with most major commercial insurances, including BCBS, Highmark, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Ambetter, Allied Trade and Jefferson Health. Our team will verify your benefits and explain what your plan actually covers before you commit to anything.

Starting Outpatient Treatment

The first step is a confidential assessment with a licensed clinician. It covers your symptoms, your history, your safety and what your week realistically contains, and ends with a recommendation — which may be this program, may be a more intensive one, and may be somewhere other than here.

Call (215) 986-2077 to start, or use verify insurance if you would rather settle the coverage question first. We are at 901 E 8th Ave #203, King of Prussia, PA 19406.

Not sure which level of care you need?

A confidential assessment takes about fifteen minutes and there’s no obligation. Our admissions team answers the phone around the clock.

Most people attend one or two sessions a week. That might be a single individual therapy hour, an individual hour plus a group, or two groups — it depends on what you and your clinician decide you need. The schedule is reviewed as treatment goes on rather than set once and left.

An Intensive Outpatient Program runs about five hours a session, three to five days a week, adding up to roughly fifteen to twenty-five hours. Outpatient is usually one or two sessions a week. IOP gives you structure and daily contact; outpatient gives you a clinical relationship while your ordinary week runs normally.

Yes. Plenty of people start at the outpatient level and never need anything more intensive. The assessment exists to check that outpatient is enough for what is actually happening — and to tell you plainly if it is not.

There is no fixed length. Some people use outpatient for a few months after stepping down from IOP; others keep a weekly session going much longer because it is doing something useful. Your clinician will review it with you rather than end it on a schedule.

Most commercial plans cover outpatient mental health care at some level. Blueview Recovery is in-network with most major commercial insurances, including BCBS, Highmark, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, Ambetter, Allied Trade and Jefferson Health. We will verify your benefits and explain your costs before treatment begins.
